Post Mantralaya fire, plywood banned from Maha Legislature

Learning a lesson from the fire that destroyed top four floors of the state secretariat last week, the authorities at the Maharashtra Legislature have imposed a ban on plywood in its vicinity. "We have asked for a complete ban on plywood in the state Legislature," principal secretary Anant Kalse told PTI. He said all the systems in the state Legislature would be revamped at the earliest. Taking a cue from the Mantralaya fire wherein it came to light that the ladder of fire brigade could not reach up to the sixth floor, Kalse said they have shifted the canteen to second floor, from the 18th floor of the Legislature building.

"We saw the fire brigade's ladder could not reach up to the sixth floor, therefore we have decided to shift the canteen from the eighteenth floor to second floor," he said.

A meeting on anti-fire measures was immediately held on the second day of the ravaging Mantralaya fire on June 21 chaired by Kalse. The meeting was attended by senior officers in the Legislature and fire officials. He also informed that they have moved a proposal for the renovation of the Legislature and along with it the structural audit of the 21-storeyed building would also be conducted.

We have asked the architect to find an alternative to wood for the renovation purpose. Iron material should be used to a large extent," he said. As a part of preventive measures, the gas cylinders in the kitchen have also been asked to be kept outside the building. "All inflammable material should be kept outside the building," Kalse said, adding that a committee of seven joint secretary level officer has been formed to review anti-fire measures.

The committee will submit its report to Dilip Walse-Patil, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, in eight days, he said. The authorities have also asked to remove the unwanted articles from the basement area of the Legislature building, he said.
